The WordPress year is off to an exciting start! Read about the State of the Word event in December, get first insights into the upcoming major WordPress release as well as exciting WordPress events coming up – of course Greyd will be there!
State of the Word
The annual “State of the Word” event took place in Tokyo in December. Traditionally, Matt Mullenweg not only shared interesting facts and updates about WordPress at the event. The host country Japan also played a major role. Among other things, the official WordPress mascot Wapuu was created here.
WordPress Statistics
- 43.6% of all websites are based on WordPress. The share of the CMS market is 62.3%
- After English (50.8%) and Spanish (6.78%), German is the most widely used language (5.99%)
- Last year alone, 1,700 new themes were added to the repo – which means that the number of block themes, i.e. full site editing themes such as Greyd, has now risen to over 1,000.
Gutenberg
Gutenberg is now in phase 3 of the project: “Collaboration”. The aim of this is to enable users to work together directly in the editor, for example through commenting functions similar to those in Google Docs.

Preparation for WP 6.8
The next major WordPress update in April is mainly focused on bug fixes and optimizations. The release team is already in place.
Tip: If you discover a bug in WordPress, make sure you report it so that it can be checked by the WordPress community and, at best, fixed directly. I will soon be publishing a detailed article on the Greyd blog about how and where you can submit bug reports and feature requests in the WordPress core.
