In addition to the preparations for the upcoming WordPress release 6.7 on November 12th (first release candidate is published) as well as technical adjustments, there are some minor improvements and functions with the latest Gutenberg releases.

1,000 Block Themes

Great news in the WordPress theme repository: In just under 1,000 days, the WordPress community has created 1,000 block themes, i.e. themes that are based on the Block & Site Editor. This includes our Greyd WP theme, which has been available to download for free from the WordPress repo since spring. By the way: So far, only 2% of all block themes have the label “accessibility-ready”. This of course includes the Greyd theme and the current default theme Twenty-Twenty-Four.

Query Loop Optimizations

“Simple things should be easy and intuitive, and complex things possible” – the query loop has been revised according to this motto. On the one hand, this involves user experience improvements (e.g. the options for the number of posts and pages have been moved to the other settings in the sidebar). On the other hand, smaller new functions (e.g. filter by post format) have also been added.

Introducing Twenty Twenty-Five

Pattern experience optimizations

In the last newsletter, we reported that we were contributing to implementing an “opt-out” for the “select pattern” modal, which opens automatically every time a new page is created. With Gutenberg 19.3, this option to hide the pattern modal has now been implemented. There is also an experimental zoom out when editing and creating patterns. These and all other adjustments from Gutenberg 19.3 will also be included in the core with the upcoming WordPress release.

Multiple images in the image block

In the same Gutenberg update there is now also the possibility to upload multiple images to the image block, which automatically transforms the block into an image gallery.
